Measuring Instructions for Shutters

It is easy to measure for your new Finecraft™ custom wood shutters. Just follow the simple steps we have outlined in this guide. We recommend going through each section in sequence before you actually start taking measurements.

Our merchandise is custom made to your specifications.  All specifications MUST be submitted to us writing by e-mail, fax or with  our on-line order form for your protection as well as ours.  Customer accepts full responsibility for own measurments.

BEFORE BEGINNING WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU HAVE AVAILABLE WITH YOU THE FOLLOWING TOOLS:

  • A high quality steel measuring tape, cloth tapes are not accurate.
  • Always read measurement on tape straight on and not on an angle.
  • The Finecraft™ Custom Shutters wood frame profile selector.
  • The Finecraft™ Custom Shutters order form so as to not miss any important information.
  • Use only a pen or pencil (no marker) to fill in the Finecraft™ order form so that all writing is legible.

DETERMINING WHERE YOU WILL MOUNT YOUR SHUTTER:
With your steel tape, measure from the front of the window opening to the obstacle that projects furthest from the back of the window. This will give the depth measurement, which will determine the louvre clearance that you need.

You must next determine if your windows are square. With your steel tape, measure the diagonal opening of your window from both left and right sides. If the measurements vary more than 3/8" your windows are out of square and you must use a frame for an outside mount.

Please use the diagrams provided below to assist you with your decision on how you will mount your shutters.

After making your selection of louvre style, enter the correct information onto the appropriate field on your Finecraft™ Custom Shutters order form.

Step 1:  MEASURING FOR AN OUTSIDE MOUNT
Once you have determined that there is not sufficient depth for an inside mount, and that you will be measuring for an outside mount, it is a great time to make your choice of frame. From your Finecraft™ Custom Shutter wood frame profile set (or the diagram below) select the appropriate frame profile for your window.

  • Please take all measurements as tight (no deductions) to the closest 1/16 of an inch.
  • Please indicate if measurement includes the frame.

WIDTH: With your steel tape, measure from the outside opening from the left side to the obstacle that projects furthest from the right side of the window.  Take this measurement at the bottom, middle and top of the window opening.  Select the widest of measurments as the correct measurement.  This will give you the measurement which will determine the width of your window.

HEIGHT: With your steel tape, measure from the outside opening from the top side to the obstacle that projects furthest from the bottom side of the window.  Take this measurement at the left, middle and right of the window opening.  Select the shortest of measurments as the correct measurement.  This will give you the measurement which will determine the height of your window.

Step 2:  MEASURING FOR AN INSIDE MOUNT
Once you have determined that there is sufficient depth, and that your window opening is square, you will be measuring for an inside mount.

  • Please take all measurements as tight (no deductions) to the closest 1/16 of an inch.

WIDTH: With your steel tape, measure from the inside opening from the left side to the obstacle that projects furthest from the right side of the window.  Take this measurement at the bottom, middle and top of the window opening.  Select the narrowest of measurments as the correct measurement.  This will give you the measurement which will determine the width of your window.

HEIGHT: With your steel tape, measure from the inside opening from the top side to the obstacle that projects furthest from the bottom side of the window.  Take this measurement at the left, middle and right of the window opening.  Select the shortest of measurments as the correct measurement.  This will give you the measurement which will determine the height of your window.
